week 10 injury updates

Kyler Murray

Injury: Foot injury

Analysis: In a sudden change of events, Murray has been placed on the injured reserve to allow his sprained foot to heal fully. Murray's foot was initially deemed a mild injury; clearly, this was incorrect as he will now miss at minimum eight weeks due to the lingering injury.

A moderate-severe foot sprain impacts a quarterback in many ways. First off, the midfoot is a critical junction in the foot whose primary responsibility is to adapt its shape depending on its role during the walking, running, or throwing cycle. When pushing off to run or throw, the foot must rapidly supinate to create a rigid foot to push off; however, when landing from a stride, or during the follow-through phase of throwing, the right foot pronates to allow shock absorption (running/walking) and to allow full rotation during the follow-through of a throw. The midfoot is a critical component of the supination and pronation motion, and when injured, these motions can be impacted.

Understanding the role of the midfoot in athletic function, we can see how a sprain that creates laxity within the foot makes it extremely difficult to run and push off to throw. Clearly, healing has not gone as planned, and Murray cannot function at a high enough level to play yet. Murray can be dropped in re-draft formats.

CJ Stroud

Injury: Concussion

Analysis: Stroud has been ruled out for week 10 with a concussion. He will have to pass through the NFL's concussion protocol.
