Week 16 NFL Injury Updates & Fantasy Impact

Week 16 nfl injury updates

Week 16 is the point of no return in fantasy football, and one bad injury decision can end your season. Saquon Barkley’s nerve scare, Kamara’s continued absence, risky returns like Drake London, and multiple concussion and knee situations are creating massive lineup traps that casual injury reports won’t catch. Below is a medical-driven breakdown of every key injury, explaining what actually impacts performance, re-injury risk, and snap counts, so you can make the right calls and survive the fantasy playoffs.

Week 16 nfl injury updates

Geno Smith

Injury: Back and shoulder injury

Analysis: Smith is on track to return in week 16 after missing week 15 with an injury to his throwing shoulder and his back. The Raiders struggled mightily without Geno, and his return will be welcomed. Having practiced in full all week, Geno is likely all but over his injuries. Acute back injuries typically respond well to treatment, and I would not expect the back injury to significantly limit his ability. An injury to the throwing shoulder can linger and impact throwing power and accuracy, easily aggravating it with either a bad hit or overuse in a game. Fantasy managers who have made it to round two of the playoffs are not relying on Geno; however, his return bodes well for Brock Bowers.

Running Backs

Week 16 nfl injury updates

Saquon Barkley

Injury: Stinger

Analysis: Saquon suffered a stinger on Sunday which knocked him out for a few plays, but ultimately finished the game without appearing to suffer any performance deficits. A stinger is an irritation to the nerves as they exit the neck and will have a wide range of impact. Nerve injuries have three different levels, each with a very sciencey name.

  1. Neuropraxia: Mild injury to the myelin sheath that surrounds the nerve. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, and burning that lasts for minutes to a few days. This is what most stingers are, and likely where Barkley's injury falls. No prolonged deficits is expected
  2. Axontmeosis: The nerve itself is injured, but not completely severed. Symptoms include weakness or paralysis, sensory loss, and pain. Recovery happens but extremely slowly (1mm/day). If this ever happens to a football player, their season is likely over.
  3. Neurotmesis: Complete severance of the nerve: Symptoms include complete paralysis and sensory loss. This would be career-ending.

Barkley's injury is undoubtedly a neuropraxia, or a very mild nerve disruption that is likely completely, or near completely, gone now. This will not affect his production in week 16 but it should be noted that the area of the nerve that was affected, as well as the entire nerve distal to the affected area, will be at a higher risk for injury.
